Welcome to Sea School
Another day, but this time, I had to get up earlier to eat my french toast and then bike to sea school.
Then we crossed the street to go seining and snorkeling. I caught a lizardfish and about 500 shrimp. I also got a lovely foot massage, courtesy of about 5 fish who mistook my feet for who knows what. If you sat in the water, the massage bunch would come up to nibble at your feet, and after sitting in the water for 10 minutes, I about 9 or 10 fish working on my feet. We left and as soon as we got back, my parents pulled up and we biked wee, wee, wee, all the way home. But we made a quick stop to get pizza, at the Island Pizza. It was awesome – especially their garlic bread! After we got back to casa de paradise, we saw the neighborhood guard gator cruising in the lake!
When we got there, I was expecting to make a good first impression, to calmly coast in and everybody else would be like “Whoa” and then I promptly toppled over next to my bike. So much for that. When I first got in, everybody was playing cards and stuff, and I had walked in with this other girl, so we went to play Jenga together. And then we played the Name Game. You know, the one where you write something about yourself and then you try to guess who wrote it? That one. In a room with 30 other kids I didn’t even know the names of. Plus 7 counselors. This was going to be very interesting. When I got the slip of paper, I put down what I always do for convenience. “I have been to all 50 states.” Never fails. Almost nobody was able to guess anybody’s. When it came to mine, everybody was very impressed; I guess it is true that most people don’t see all the states. It never seemed like a big deal at our house because it was my dad’s goal and I adopted it.
After everyone had guessed everything wrong, we went to have a trash pick-up contest. I found lots of tile. Someone even found boxer shorts floating in the water!!!!! After we were all completely grossed out from collecting 3 buckets of trash, we headed back to eat. After washing our hands. We were then instructed in the fine art of surf paddling, where you lay down on a surfboard and then paddle. We headed to a different beach to try it out. While we waited, we picked things up from the ocean floor. We found a living fighting conch, and minutes later, a sharp pain in my foot told me I had found another. Somebody else found a sea cucumber, which was by far the coolest thing any of us had found. I also had to detach a baby stone crab from the edge of my thumb. As for surfing, I was alright… except for the time where I had my eyes shut and didn’t move. And the time where I couldn’t turn around and kept going straight. And the time I attempted to stand up and fell off screaming and got salt water in my mouth. And the time I fell off while laying down. At the end, though, I made it!
